Whenever possible avoid handling your coins. Scratched, dirty, or coins marred from handling have less value than those in mint condition. Direct contact with your collection should be avoided, especially with coins in mint condition, but if you have to touch please do so by only holding the outer edge.

You should try to avoid cleaning your coins and if it has to be done, the process should be handled by a specialist. In fact, the patina developed on a coin over time may actually be a desirable quality to collectors and a cleaned coin could actually decrease it's potential value.

The most prized collectible coins in your collection should be stored in an excellent holder that safeguards against fingerprints, dust, and even moisture. Typical stapled or taped packets do not provide the optimum amount of protection, however there are other protectors available that can also protect against moisture. When selecting a storage space for your collectible coins, make sure they are not in an area given to dampness, such as a cellar or basement.
