Try to handle your coins as little as possible. Scratched, dirty, or coins marred from handling have less value than those in mint condition. Refrain from direct contact with your coins, especially mint condition ones, but necessary handling should always be done by only touching the rim of the coin and never the center.

Cleaning coins is not recommended and should be done only by an expert, and only when absolutely necessary. Removing a coin's slowly developed patina might make it less tempting to collectors and possibly less valuable.

The most prized commemorative coins in your collection should be stored in an excellent holder that safeguards against fingerprints, dust, and even moisture. Stapled or taped packets don’t give maximum protection, but there are other protectors in the market that can also guard effectively against moisture. Protect your collectible coins when they are in storage by choosing a dry space and never one that is damp and cool, such as the basement.
