Avoid touching your coins as much as possible. A coins' quality and value decline when scratched, dusty, damaged by moisture or when fingerprints are present. When it's absolutely necessary you should hold them on the edges.

It is usually not a good idea to clean coins, so if it has to be done, the process should be entrusted to an expert. Removing a coin's slowly developed patina might make it less tempting to collectors and possibly less valuable.

Most holders provide adequate protection for dimes but you will want to be sure that your most valuable coins are protected not only from fingerprints and dust, but also moisture. Stapled or taped containers don’t protect very well, but there are other options available that can also block moisture. Protect your collectible coins when they are in storage by choosing a dry space and never one that is damp and cool, such as the basement.
