The less you handle your coins the better. The condition of collectible coins impacts the value: dirty, scratched, moisture-damaged or otherwise imperfect coins can result from too much handling. If circumstances require you to touch your collectibles, do so touching only the outsides, especially with very valuable or rare coins in good condition.

Cleaning coins is not recommended and if necessary should be left to an expert. Collectors might actually value the patina a coin has gradually developed, and consider a cleaned coin less desirable.

Most holders provide adequate protection for half cent but you will want to be sure that your most valuable coins are protected not only from fingerprints and dust, but also moisture. Typical stapled or taped packets do not provide the optimum amount of protection, however there are other protectors available that can also protect against moisture. Never keep your collectible coins in a damp, dark, cool area such as the cellar; instead, choose somewhere dry and with a steady temperature.
