Keep handling of the coin itself to the bare minimum. A coins' quality and value decline when scratched, dusty, damaged by moisture or when fingerprints are present. Refrain from direct contact with your coins, especially mint condition ones, but necessary handling should always be done by only touching the rim of the coin and never the center.

Cleaning coins is not recommended and if necessary should be left to an expert. Since collectors might seek coins with the patina of time, cleaning a coin could make it less valuable.

Most holders provide adequate protection for large cents but you will want to be sure that your most valuable coins are protected not only from fingerprints and dust, but also moisture. Stapled or taped containers don’t protect very well, but there are other options available that can also block moisture. If you are storing your collectible coins, select a space that is dry over any prone to dampness or humidity.
